A portrait of work, landscape and community in an era of globalization. In the rich fabric of Sarnia, Ontario's landscape— the bright sprawl of petrochemical plants, swollen hospital wards and crowded bars— one finds a microcosm of the 21st century. Tattooed men serving fries, basement musicians, boilermakers and volunteer firemen, heartbroken widows and an optimistic mayor - the lives of a diverse medley of characters intersect to reveal the dramas and contradictions of an industrial town out of sync with a post-industrial world. As the dystopian architecture of the petrochemical plants, squatted like crushed space stations just meters away from homes and schoolyards, give way to the spaces that make this city a community, we begin to see what it is that everyone seems so afraid to lose. Land of Destiny is a tender portrait of a working-class city in paralysis and a devastating investigation into when and for what people fight for.

Captain Jerry Crawford (Tom Keene) who, with his Mississippi Vollunteers, is stationed at Fort Escambria in 1817, is summoned to the aid of a frontier family which has suffered an attack at the hands of the warring Seminole Indians. While driving off the raiders, Jerry and his side-kick "Kentuck" (Budd Buster), come across a gun used by an Indian. It is of such quality that the soldiers suspect white renegades of supplying the weapons to the Seminoles. Bill Crawford (David Sharpe), Jerry's younger brother, while carrying a boatload of supplies and munitions to Fort Escambria, is stopped by Bill Holston (Robert Fiske), Provost Marshal for Don Salvador Dominguez (Carlos De Valdez'), in Florida, and his henchman Jenkins (Ray Bennett). Bill is tricked into crossing into Spanish territory while his cargo is seized. Bill is returned to Florida and sentenced to be shot at dawn.

After serving his time for a crime he did not commit, ex-convict Jimmy Doyle is determined to go straight for the one he loves, Nancy Preston. Thereafter, Doyle notifies the man who framed him, Detective James Tierny, that any further false accusations will result in his death. Double-crossed by former pals, Doyle is sent back to prison but escapes in time to rescue Nancy from Dave Monteith, one of the colleagues who betrayed him. But when Monteith is killed by an accomplice, suspicion points to Doyle as the murderer. Desperate, he and Nancy run away to a small town where, because he once studied medicine, he becomes an assistant in his uncle's hospital. Meanwhile, Tierney is closing in on Doyle when he suffers an attack of appendicitis from which only Doyle can save him. Resisting his baser feelings, Doyle performs the operation and saves his foe's life. Finally, word arrives that the real murderer has been found, then Tierney gives Doyle and Nancy his blessings.
